Sen. Ted Little touring AMSTI site Wednesday
December 7, 2009
On Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m., Senator Ted Little will visit the Auburn University-hosted site of the Alabama Mathematics, Science and Technology Initiative, or AMSTI. AMSTI is a Department of Education sponsored, K-12 education program that strives to improve statewide mathematics and science teaching and learning. The Auburn AMSTI location, which is supported by the College of Sciences and Mathematics and the College of Education, serves 46 schools in eight counties by providing teachers with professional development, equipment and materials and onsite support. Students in participating AMSTI schools are taught math, science and technology using a hands-on, activity-based approach. AMSTI has met with extraordinary success since its inception in 2000, and is currently the most effective statewide initiative for improving math and science teaching. For three straight years, in every case, on every standardized test given by the Alabama Department of Education, AMSTI schools outperformed matched non-AMSTI schools, often dramatically. For more information on AMSTI, go to the Web site. For more information on Sen. Little's visit, call the Auburn AMSTI office at 844-8114.
